‘Society needs to change to empower women’
Minister Lindiwe Sisulu says more needs to be done to change the patriarchal nature of society.
CAPE TOWN - Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu says society needs to change to empower women.
The minister is speaking at a Women's Month celebration hosted by the South African Students Congress at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Bellville.
Sisulu says at the last African National Congress policy conference, two commissions were set up to deal with the issue of social transformation.
“It doesn’t matter what we do about the economy or the rural areas, unless we change the fabric of our society and the consciousness of society, we will not be free.”-
She added more needs to be done to change the patriarchal nature of society.
“Women have formed the backbone of society but still remain trapped in a patriarchal and for as long as that is so, we will continue to reproduce a society where men are regarded as more equal than women.”
