JOHANNESBURG - While the Gauteng Social Development Department is working on shutting down an unregistered crèche in Sharpeville where a toddler died, the child’s mother says she has also opened a case with police so she can have closure.

Two-year-old Bohlale Mokoena died at the Little Sunshine Daycare Centre earlier this month allegedly under suspicious circumstances.

Staff say he was sleeping in a cot and when they checked on him they discovered he wasn’t breathing.

Bohlale Mokoena’s mother, Mphonyana, says she doesn’t believe or accept the explanation she’s been given by staff. She says she is glad government is shutting down the Little Sunshine Daycare.

“The MEC said they will issue a notice of closure.”

Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza says a police investigation opened by Bohlale’s mother will run simultaneously with her department’s.

“And of course, Mpho did report the matter to the police, so there is an investigation that’s going on.”

Mokoena says her son did not show any signs of sickness on the morning of 2 August, when he was dropped off at crèche.
