Manyi: Is it because I'm black?
After being labelled a Gupta puppet, new owner of ANN7 and 'The New Age' Mzwanele Manyi says there is general institutionalised racism that SA must deal with.
JOHANNESBURG – Former government spokesperson Mzwanele Manyi says in the interests of transparency, he decided to show documents proving he's the sole shareholder of his company and takes offence to being called the Gupta puppet.
Last week, Manyi announced that his company, Lodidox, bought ANN7 and The New Age with a loan from the controversial family.
At a briefing on Wednesday, Manyi revealed documents showing he’s the sole shareholder of Lodidox and, therefore, the sole owner of the two media houses.
He says he decided to do this to prove he’s not fronting for anyone.
“Without any evidence whatsoever that I’m a puppet, so everybody else that’s asking is asking I’m already contaminated in my head that why do these people think I’m a puppet?
“So is it because I’m black? Black people in this country are generally not trusted. It’s the general institutionalised racism that we have in this country that we must deal with.”

Yesterday at a press briefing Manyi said: “The ANN7 and 'The New Age' employ close to 500 staff whose jobs have been saved by this deal; a point which has escaped a lot of reportage on this matter. In fact, we also plan to attract a lot more new talent as we grow this business.”
