Flushed out: Initiative helps CT schools cut down water usage

Stellenbosch University professor, Tinus Booysen, has embarked on the project to identify the causes of high water usage, through latching on a smart meter on to the school's municipal supply.

CAPE TOWN - An initiative targeted at helping schools cut down their water usage is bearing fruit.

Stellenbosch University professor, Tinus Booysen, has embarked on the project to identify the causes of high water usage, through latching on a smart meter on to the school's municipal supply.

One Wallacedene school was able to cut their usage by 20 kilolitres per day using the technology.

Booysen says that they are currently assisting five schools in the Cape Town region.

“To my surprise, it was the urinals which consume about 1 kilo litre per day. Other things include toilets that flush throughout the night. It adds up very quickly, with 40 toilets per school.”
