Harmony Gold saddened by death of its employee at Kusasalethu mine

The mine worker was brought to the surface by special mine rescue teams last night but succumbed to his injuries.

JOHANNESBURG – Harmony Gold says it’s deeply saddened by the death of one of its employees at its Kusasalethu Operations near Carletonville on the West Rand.

The mineworker is among five workers who were trapped on Friday following a seismic event.

He was brought to the surface by special mine rescue teams last night but succumbed to his injuries.

The company says it will continue to use all its efforts to ensure that the four remaining trapped miners are rescued as soon as possible.

Harmony Gold spokesperson Lauren Fourie says, “Our sincere condolences go to the family and friends of the deceased. Four employees still remain unaccounted for and rescue efforts will continue until they have been found.”
