Trapped miner dies, search for 4 continues at Kusasalethu Mine

The mineworkers got trapped in the mine on Friday morning following a seismic event underground.

JOHANNESBURG - Harmony Gold Mining says one of the five miners trapped at its Kusasalethu Mine near Carletonville on the West Rand has been brought to the surface but has succumbed to his injuries.

The mineworkers got trapped in the mine on Friday morning following a seismic event underground.

The company says its rescue team has been working tirelessly since the incident occurred to ensure that all trapped miners are rescued.

It says four employees still remain unaccounted for and rescue efforts will continue until they have been found.

Spokesperson Lauren Fourie says all efforts are made to get to the remaining four mine workers as quickly as possible and in the safest manner.

“Our sincere condolences go to the family and friends of the deceased. Four employees still remain unaccounted for and the rescue efforts will continue until they’ve been found.”
