JOHANNESBURG – Five miners remain trapped underground after a seismic event at Harmony Gold’s Kusasalethu Operation near Carletonville on the West Rand.

Rescue officials spent most of Friday trying to locate the workers and managed to make contact with only one of them.

The firm says the operations will continue until they are found.

Harmony Gold’s Marian van der Walt says, “Certainly this is of great concern to Harmony and we just want to call on all the listeners to pray with us because it is important to us that we bring these employees to surface safely.”

Harmony Gold's Charmaine Russell says operations at the mine have been halted.

“All employees have been brought to the surface safely except for the employees who have not been accounted for and safety efforts continue.”

Russel added: “We’ve already got the Department of Mineral Resources here, we’ve stopped the operation and we’re focusing on making sure that we bring our employees to safety.”
