JOHANNESBURG - Rescue officials have managed to make contact with one of the five miners who were missing and trapped underground after a seismic event at Harmony Gold’s Kusasalethu operation in Carletonville on the West Rand.

“We have been able to make contact with one individual earlier this afternoon but we will continue to provide updates as and when we receive them.”

It's understood the incident occurred earlier on Friday and the firm says rescue teams are working tirelessly to reach the miners.

Harmony Gold's Charmaine Russel says operations at the mine have been halted.

“All employees have been brought to the surface safely except for the employees who have not been accounted for and safety efforts continue.”

Russel added: “We’ve already got the Department of Mineral Resources here, we’ve stopped the operation and we’re focusing on making sure that we bring our employees to safety.”

The firm says rescue operations will continue throughout the night to ensure the safety of the trapped miners.
