CAPE TOWN – Ambulance crew members who were attacked in Gugulethu are receiving trauma counselling.
Paramedics and police who were escorting them came under attack on Wednesday night. A shootout ensued, leaving an officer and a suspect wounded.
Another suspected criminal was killed.
Parts of Gugulethu have been declared so-called red zones for health officials, meaning that they can’t access these areas without a police escort.
Metro Emergency Management Service spokesperson Robert Daniels this isn’t the first time the crew has been targeted by criminals.
“The Western Cape government Health Emergency medical services received a call from NY 147 in Gugulethu where a patient was coughing and vomiting.
“Police escorted the crew to the address where the police vehicle was shot at, critically wounding one SAPS member. SAPS returned fire, killing one shooter and wounding another.”
