CAPE TOWN – Bell Pottinger could be stripped of its membership of the UK’s Public Relations and Communications Association.

This after a disciplinary committee upheld a complaint lodged against the PR agency by the Democratic Alliance (DA).

The party has accused Bell Pottinger of exploiting racial divisions in South Africa through campaigns for the Gupta-owned Oakbay.

The DA’s complaint was based on information revealed in the highly publicised Gupta email leaks.

The documents suggest that the family hired Bell Pottinger to do much more than just to polish Oakbay’s image.

The DA highlighted the agency’s involvement in a speech delivered by the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL)’s Collen Maine in which he warns anyone who disrupts the State of the Nation Address to prepare for civil war.

Dealings between President Jacob Zuma's son Duduzane Zuma and Bell Pottinger also formed part of the complaint.

The DA claims that the emails reveal Duduzane Zuma used the agency to undermine the ANC’s communication on policies to the benefit of the Guptas.

Should the PRCA board agree with the disciplinary committee’s decision to uphold the complaint, Bell Pottinger could become only the second agency ever to have its membership revoked.
