JOHANNESBURG - Former president Thabo Mbeki says too many people are killed daily in Africa over political issues.
Mbeki was speaking on Thursday morning at this year’s African Leadership Forum in Boksburg on the East Rand.
His foundation is hosting the event with Tanzania’s former President Benjamin Mkapa for the first time in South Africa.
They’re set to discuss matters including sustainable development on the continent over the next two days.
Mbeki says African leaders need to do better.
“It’s an important topic, obviously, the issue of peace and security on our continent because of the challenges that we continue to face.”
Mbeki has urged African leaders to remain alert as violence could erupt, adding that African leaders need to ensure the peace and stability of people.
“And I think that many of us would also sense that even in some of our countries, where there’s no conflict of a violent kind that it may very well be that it might break out at some point, when one looks at the trends, and deduce some kind of early warning system.”
