Cop shot while escorting ambulance in Gugulethu

CAPE TOWN - A police officer has been shot and wounded while escorting an ambulance to a patient in Gugulethu.

The shooting occurred on Wednesday night after paramedics were requested to attend to a person who was coughing and vomiting.

Gugulethu has been declared a red zone for health officials, meaning that the area cannot be entered without a police escort.

Police killed one of the gunmen and injured another.

Metro ES Spokesperson Robert Daniels said: “On Wednesday evening, we received a call from NY 147 in Gugulethu where a patient was allegedly coughing and vomiting. With the area being a red zone, a police escort was immediately requested to assist the EMS. Police escorted the crew to the address where the police vehicle was shot at.”
