Mokonyane shrugs off suggestions of instability in department
Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane's department has had two DGs and two interim DGs since 2014.
CAPE TOWN - Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane has shrugged off suggestions by Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts that there's instability within her department.
Director General Dan Mashitisho is currently on suspension, just over six months since taking the job.
He's one of four senior department officials on suspension.
Minister Mokonyane says Mashitisho is being disciplined for dereliction of duty.
According to her, his reporting to Parliament has been undesirable and he's failed to implement the department's annual performance plan.
Mashitisho's administration of the department is also being called into question.
The department has had two DGs and two interim DGs since 2014.
Committee chairperson Themba Godi said: “How was this one appointed and immediately just fails? Meaning we lost an opportunity to appoint a qualitative person to do the job.”
Mokonyane says Mashitisho will remain on suspension until 16 September.
