Court grants SA rhino owner permission to auction horns

John Hume turned to the court requesting the Environmental Affairs Department issue him a permit for the online auction.

JOHANNESBURG – The High Court in Pretoria has granted rhino owner John Hume permission to hold an online auction on Monday morning.

Hume turned to the court requesting the Environmental Affairs Department issue him a permit for the online auction.

Two months ago, the International Fund for Animal Welfare condemned the local rhino breeder’s plans to sell his stockpile online.

The organisation said the horns would ultimately end up on the black market.

A recent moratorium makes the sale of horn legal as long as it remains in South Africa.
