JOHANNESBURG - The N3 Toll Concession Company has confirmed that a massive veld fire is moving across the Villiers area in the Free State.

Thick smoke has made it difficult to drive along the route between Villiers and Vrede.

Gail force winds are fanning the flames, threatening farm land.

The N3 Toll Concessions Company's Con Roux says roads in the area have now been closed.

“There have been at least three crashes unfortunately which appears to be directly linked to the smoke across the road. Presently [the road] between the Villiers, Vrede and Frankfort interchange which is about 30km south of Villiers has been closed.”
