Pupils to get counselling after learner killed in gang violence crossfire

CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department says counselling has been made available at a Hanover Park school after a learner was caught in the crossfire of gang violence.
Sixteen-year-old Octavia Johanessen was shot dead on Monday night.
This comes as Parliament’s Police Portfolio Committee requests a more detailed briefing on the police’s anti-gang strategy.
Ongoing gang violence on the Cape Flats has claimed yet another life.
Johanessen, who was a grade 9 pupil at Crystal High School in Hanover Park, had gone to a house shop in Howick Court when rival gangsters opened fire.
The victim was caught in the gun battle and sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
She died on the scene.
The Western Cape Education MEC’s spokesperson Jessica Shelver says they're deeply saddened by the tragedy.
“Our heartfelt condolences do go out to the family, friends and the community. Counselling will be provided at the school as required.”
Police say no arrests have yet been made in connection with her murder.
