Mthembu slates 'ill-disciplined' ANC MPs following no-show

They refused to attend a meeting of the portfolio committee of Public Service and Administration because it’s chaired by outspoken parliamentarian Makhosi Khoza.

CAPE TOWN – African National Congress (ANC) Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu’s office has come down hard on Members of Parliament (MPs) who boycotted a Parliamentary meeting on Tuesday because of internal party politics, slating them for gross ill-discipline.

They refused to attend a meeting of the portfolio committee of Public Service and Administration because it’s chaired by outspoken parliamentarian Makhosi Khoza.

The rift stems from Khoza's criticism of President Jacob Zuma and her backing of a secret vote in last week’s motion of no confidence in him.

Internal ANC politics came to the fore during Tuesday’s portfolio committee meeting when five MPs failed to show up.

The committee was due to quiz Minister Faith Muthambi about reports that she blew taxpayers’ money by flying 30 friends and family to Cape Town for her budget vote speech in May, but Muthambi had also snubbed the meeting.

EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi likened their behaviour to sabotage.

“There’s a deliberate plan to collapse the functioning of Parliament to hold the Cabinet of Duduzane’s father (Zuma) accountable.”

ANC Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu’s office says the absentee MPs are being referred to the Caucus Disciplinary Committee.
