JOHANNESBURG - An Ekurhuleni metro police officer convicted of murder in December is still in the employ of the department.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) has confirmed that Sydney Nkabinde has been deployed to do administrative work within the department while waiting to appear in court for sentencing next month.

Nkabinde shot and killed Vuyo Xakane in 2015 when Xakane tried to bribe him with a camera.

The EMPD's Kobeli Mokheseng says an internal investigation is underway to determine Nkabinde's future with the service.

“Nkabinde is still in our employ but a disciplinary hearing has been held to determine his future.”
