CAPE TOWN - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has taken over the investigation into an attempted armed robbery involving Western Cape Social Development MEC Albert Fritz.

Fritz and his bodyguards were attacked earlier on Saturday outside a church in Nyanga.

One suspect was shot and killed, while another was seriously wounded.

The police’s Frederick van Wyk says the investigation into Saturday morning’s shooting in Nyanga is being investigated by Ipid.

“It is alleged the two armed suspects tried to rob the MEC and his spokesperson of their cellphones. The MEC’s protectors fired shots in response. Ipid has taken over the investigation.”

One bystander was also wounded in the incident.

Fritz had been attending a women's day event at the church this morning when he and his entourage were attacked.

The City of Cape Town has confirmed Fritz and his security personnel were not hurt.
