Vadi to lift suspension on Soweto taxi routes?
Vadi says his department has been meeting with two taxi associations but it seems Nanduwe could not agree with the department on the way forward.
JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Transport MEC Ismail Vadi says he will be making a decision on Friday on whether to extend or lift the suspension of certain taxi routes in Soweto following several incidents of violence.
The department closed five taxi ranks and several routes in and around Soweto a month ago after clashes between rival taxi unions Wata and Nanduwe.
Vadi says his department has been meeting with the two taxi associations but it seems that Nanduwe could not agree with the department on the way forward.
He says a new proposal on how to deal with the taxi violence in Soweto has been made but Nanduwe will first have to consult its members before agreeing to it.
"There is a proposal for them to consider. We wait for their response."
It's not yet clear what that proposal entails.
The MEC will make an announcement today, which could see commuters using the old taxi ranks or continue to use alternative plans.
