CAPE TOWN - The implementation of Icasa's proposed regulations over the expiration of data could be dragged out if the issue lands up in court.

The communications regulator published draft regulations in the Government Gazette on Tuesday in an attempt to address the issue.

The notice suggests that smaller data bundles between 1 and 5 gigs remain valid for 90 days while the bigger bundles must have a lifespan of at least 24 months.

Techcentral's Duncan Mcleod says he anticipates mobile operators to argue that the proposed measures could push up prices.

“As we’ve seen in the past where Icasa has come up with regulations and providers don’t agree with them, the matter can go to court and if that happens it could be delayed by a year or more.”
