PRETORIA - A fifth suspect in the assault at a KFC in Montana has made a brief appearance in the Pretoria North magistrates court, where the matter was postponed until Thursday for a bail application.

Joshua Schultz handed himself over to the police on Monday.

Schultz was part of a group of white men who allegedly assaulted a black couple last Wednesday. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

Schultz’s defence advocate told the court that they wanted to bring the bail application on Tuesday but the magistrate declined the request.

The State argued that it still needs to conclude certain aspects of its investigation, in particular, to ascertain the safety of the two victims.

Schultz will remain in custody until Thursday when he will apply for bail with three other co-accused.

It emerged that only one of the men who appeared in court on Friday applied for and was granted bail.
