The latest Stats SA figures puts the number of unemployed at 6.2 million people or about a quarter of the population capable of working.
The survey found that employment declined by 113,000 but so did the number of job-seekers by about 32,000, which has kept the unemployment rate at 27.7%.
While the overall rate remains unchanged compared to the previous quarter, there were some gains in losses in several sectors.
Construction lost 110,000 jobs while agriculture shrunk by 40,000 jobs.
Big gains were seen in the trade sector, which grew by 58,000 new posts, while finance took on 17,000 more people.
