Top cop's no-show at Glebelands site visit a concern for Parly committee
Committee chair François Beukman says Lesetja Mothiba’s visit would have been even more critical given last night’s shooting at the infamous Glebelands hostel in Umlazi
DURBAN – Parliament’s Police Portfolio Committee will on Friday visit the Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi following the killing of yet another person there.
The committee has been conducting site visits in KwaZulu-Natal this week where acting National Commissioner Lesetja Mothiba was called to account for various crises at police stations.
Mothiba, however, failed to arrive.
Members of Parliament’s police committee have expressed their disappointment at Mothiba’s failure to meet with them this morning despite the current policing crisis in KZN.
Committee chair François Beukman says that Mothiba’s visit would have been even more critical given last night’s shooting at the infamous Glebelands hostel in Umlazi.
“And we take it on a very serious light. I’ll write to the Minister of Police this afternoon, expressing our serious concern with regard to that. General Mothiba will have to come and explain to Parliament on 16 August.”
The latest murder comes just a week after two people were gunned down.
The committee says it will be visiting the hostel later today.
