JOHANNESBURG - The Mineral Resources Department has withdrawn its plan to impose a moratorium suspending the issuance of new mining and prospecting rights.

The department says that based on various submissions from industry players on its proposed move, it will not go ahead with the moratorium.

Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane had said in July he intended to suspend the granting of applications for prospecting and mining rights.

The Chamber of Mines' Dr Elize Strijdom says they've now reached an agreement with Zwane.

“We have this agreement which has been made an order of the court. And in terms of that the minister will not implement this moratorium that he said he wanted to implement against processing of applications for mining right. So he will not implement it.”
