JOHANNESBURG - Interim SABC board chair Khanyisile Kweyama says a shortlist of five candidates for the broadcaster's top jobs, is being kept under lock and key.

She today told Parliament's Communications Committee this was to ensure there would be no interference in the appointment of the chief executive and chief operating officers.

Kweyama says the process of vetting all new appointments and more than 500 existing executives and managers is now fully underway.

With the SABC's two top jobs vacant following the departure of James Aguma and Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the broadcaster's interim board says it has their successors lined up.

But it's awaiting approval from the Communications Minister, and the terms of the new contracts are still being finalised.

“We have not felt intimidated or harassed on the positions. We believe that we have conducted a fair process.”

Parliament's Communications Committee is also sifting through 362 applications to serve on the new SABC board.

Chairperson Humphrey Maxegwana says the committee will begin shortlisting potential candidates next week.

It's unclear whether any of the interim board members have applied to serve permanently.
