CAPE TOWN - Parliament’s public service and administration committee chairperson Makhosi Khoza says she had no knowledge of the costs allegedly incurred by Minister Faith Muthambi for her budget vote address.

It's been reported Muthambi spent more than R300,000 flying 30 family members and friends to Cape Town.

Khoza says the committee will be expecting supporting documents to verify the claims.

She says in light of austerity measures put in place during the budgetary period, Minister Muthambi will have to explain her expenditure to the committee.

“We consider what she spent money on as frills because there’s no reason why you should be sending more than 30 members of your family to a budget speech.”

Khoza, who vociferously grilled Muthambi during the SABC inquiry when Muthambi was Communications Minister, says the matter is not personal.

“We cannot compromise our effective oversight function.”

Khoza says she hopes Muthambi will cooperate with the committee to deal with the issue as speedily as possible.
