SA woman among 9 rescued from Malaysia’s alleged trafficking syndicate
The women went to Malaysia last week believing they were going to participate in a beauty pageant in Kuala Lumpur.
JOHANNESBURG - Local and international law enforcement officials have rescued nine women in Malaysia who are believed to have been part of a sex trafficking syndicate.
The women, one of whom is South African, are from different parts of the world.
The women went to Malaysia last week believing they were going to participate in a beauty pageant in Kuala Lumpur.
It's understood they were held hostage in a hotel room upon their arrival in that country and would have been shipped to various parts of the globe if the authorities didn't intervene.
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi says one person is currently in custody in Malaysia.
“We worked together with the Malaysian anti-human trafficking task team, we managed to get into the hotel and rescued the nine ladies. Our lady was then taken to out embassy and she will come back tomorrow.’
