CAPE TOWN – Residents of a township near Pelican Park say they are tired of living in squalor.

A group of disgruntled Phumlani Village residents took to the streets on Thursday morning to protest their poor living conditions.

The overpowering stench of human excrement hits the nose before frustrated residents open the doors of three communal toilets situated deep in Phumlani Village to show what they have to endure.

At least 16 households rely on the toilets.

Community leader Sidwell Kweba says locals felt they had no option but to protest to have their plight heard by City of Cape Town officials.

Police are to continue monitoring the area.
