Lehohla says the public sector under the new construction works programme spent over R1 million less in 2016 compared to 2015.

PRETORIA - Statistician General Pali Lehohla says government built fewer houses in the past financial year, compared to other years.

Lehohla says compared to the construction of roads and non-residential buildings, housing construction has hit a slump.

Lehohla says the public sector under the new construction works programme spent over R1 million less in 2016 compared to 2015.

“Well, it implies that fewer houses are being built. Probably priorities have shifted and as you will see, it's more about roads, it’s about construction and that has gone up for public infrastructure such as roads and so on.”

That’s despite the budget for the 2016 construction programme being raised from R174 billion to R194 billion.
