CAPE TOWN - Parliament heard that there is currently no investigation into State Security Minister David Mahlobo's alleged links to the rhino horn trade.

An Al-Jazeera investigative documentary last year revealed Mahlobo’s alleged close ties with a Chinese businessman and massage parlour owner in Mbombela.

Guan Jiang Guang reportedly smuggles rhino horn to Beijing.

The minister denied the allegations.

Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa says the claims can't be substantiated.

“If a man comes here and makes allegations …. We looked for him and found loopholes already in what he is saying. I’m not sure what else needs to be done.”

Minister Molewa has also given an update on government's efforts in dealing with the rhino poaching.

Molewa says that from January 2017 to last month, 529 rhino have been poached, compared to 542 over the same period last year.

"We are happy to report that the Skukuza Regional Court has been sitting since March 2017 and is now fully functional with a number of successful prosecutions."

The Kruger National Park has seen a 34% drop in poaching since January.

The carcasses of 243 of the animals have been found in the reserve, compared to 354 last year.
