MARSEILLE - South African cyclist Louis Meintjes finished 8th at the Tour de France won by Team Sky’s Chris Froome on Saturday for the 4th time.

Speaking in an exclusive video interview with EWN Sport in Marseille, Meintjes says he’s naturally delighted but it's been incredibly tough.

“A lot of hard work and stressful, especially this past week because all the work that goes into preparations can disappear if you make a mistake. So, I’m happy to have finished the race with everything still intact.”

It’s been one of the closest tours in history with Froome only sealing the victory with an excellent time trial in stage 20 in Marseille.

Meintjes says that’s brought about different pressures.

“It’s been different, one had to find places to take an advantage this year. Whereas previous years it was just the strongest rider who came up on top. This year, it was very close.”

He says the support he's received has been overwhelming.

“It’s been absolutely amazing. I can’t read all the messages, there’s just not enough time after a stage but I’m really grateful. And thanks to everyone who’s been sending messages of support.”
