CAPE TOWN - The mother of a child sex victim of convicted paedophile Andries Retief says she feels guilty that she missed the signs of abuse.

Retief’s initial eight-year sentence was set aside in the High Court on Friday.

He was convicted on more than 2,000 charges related to child sex crimes in 2015.

Relieved with the new ruling and the prospect of 10 years behind bars for the convicted sex pest, this mother says she blames herself for her son’s trauma because she allowed her eight-year-old to sleep over at the home of an entrusted friend and neighbour.

“How could they do this? We were friends. We the parents discovered the videos on Andries computer.”

During the trial, the magistrate said she had deviated from a harsher sentence because it was unclear how the acts would affect any of the children as many of the victims were asleep when they were sexually assaulted.

This was among the misdirection Judge Andre le Grange challenged on Friday.

Le Grange also charged the collection of over 10,000 child abuse images over a decade indicate Retief has a propensity sexually re-offend.
