MiWay to name & shame culprit once probe into racist email concluded
MiWay says an internal investigation has revealed that the email was fabricated by a disgruntled client.
JOHANNESBURG - Following widespread reaction to a racist email screenshot, MiWay insurance says it will name and shame the culprit at the end of its investigation.
An email in which one official makes reference to a management decision not to process 90% of claims from black clients, calling them ‘baboons' and 'easy targets' has gone viral on Thursday, prompting calls for a boycott of the firm.
MiWay says an internal investigation has revealed that the email was fabricated by a disgruntled client who is trying to punish the company.
CEO Rene Otto says updates on the investigation will be made public.
“If we get to a stage where we’ve got evidence beyond reasonable doubt, I don’t see why we should keep it a secret. But we also have to be careful that we don’t mention somebody’s name and it backfires on you, I think we’ll just share as much information as we can on this topic.”

Otto says they have enlisted the help of an independent forensic expert in their investigation into the matter.
Otto said: “It’s not independently verified, we have to investigate further. The process we want to follow now is to involve a forensic investigator because we also don’t want to have a situation where it looks like we did our own little inside job just to cover up facts.”
