Pieter de Villiers: Appointment of Rassie Erasmus undermines Coetzee

It is expected that Erasmus will be a hands-on director of Rugby but SA Rugby was quick to state that the appointment does not mean Coetzee is being replaced.

CAPE TOWN – In an exclusive interview with EWN Sport, former Springbok coach Pieter de Villiers believes the appointment of Rassie Erasmus as Director of Rugby undermines the incumbent Bok coach Allister Coetzee.

Erasmus, who left a year ago to take up a position at Irish province, Munster, will return to oversee South African rugby’s eight national teams and participation and management of 20 competitions as well as the development of players, coaches and referees.

It is expected that Erasmus will be a hands-on director of Rugby but SA Rugby was quick to state that the appointment does not mean Coetzee is being replaced.

The Boks suffered a string of disastrous losses last year but have brought back some pride this year with a convincing 3-0 series win against France.

Brendan Venter has been added as a defensive consultant while Franco Smith is the backline coach in a reshuffle at the beginning of the year.

De Villiers was in charge of the national team from 2008 to 2011, some of his highlights included a series win against the British Lions as well as beating the All Blacks three times in a year.

He says Coetzee must stand his ground when asked if Erasmus appointment undermined the Bok coach.

“Definitely, but that’s not our part to deal with that, it is the coach’s competency. He must stand up for himself, he can’t expect you and me to stand for him there, and he must do it himself.

“He must fight it when the people accuse him, especially when it comes to the Rugby World Cup questions.”

De Villiers feels SA Rugby have overlooked candidates who have coached at the highest level.

“Why didn’t you bring a guy with experience or why don't you bring a guy like Jake White with his kind of experience who understand what it takes to win, and you sit there alone in your room and you have to make those decisions because you have to take the responsibility that comes with it.”

He says he expects a clash of characters with the likes of Erasmus and Venter in the Bok camp.

“What I can tell you, I’m looking to seeing Rassie Erasmus there because Brendan Venter believes in himself too much and Rassie also and everybody is going to be there also. So I’d like to see the fireworks.”

De Villiers explained how he feels about having a director of Rugby if he was the coach.

“I’d never allow anybody if I have a clause, I’d never allow anybody to determine my performance.”

He then added that Erasmus and Venter could cause tension within the camp.
