JOHANNESBURG – A man believed to be an Uber operator will appear in a Johannesburg court on Tuesday for allegedly beating a police officer.

The assault happened during clashes between Uber and metered taxi operators in Sandton on Monday.

The public transport rivals have been fighting for market share for months now.

On Monday, an Uber operator died in Pretoria after his vehicle was petrol bombed during scuffles last month.

The police’s Kay Makhubele says they won’t tolerate any more violence between Uber and metered taxi drivers.

“A 59-year-old man who was arrested outside Gautrain station in Sandton will be appearing in court soon.”
