CAPE TOWN - The mother of an 18-year old learner who was killed by a cellmate in a Beaufort West police station is planning to sue all the officers on duty on the night of his murder.

Gerdo Karelse had been murdered by Zuko Mgugquthu who shared a cell with him in June last year.

Mgugquthu was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment two months ago after pleading guilty.

The Beaufort West police captain on duty at the time of the attack was fired following a disciplinary hearing, while another officer who was also disciplined resigned.

Karelse's mother Sannie Wyls has approached attorney Mitchell Andreas for help in suing the police.

β€œIt’s a civil claim and our advocates are busy with finalising the summons that will be served in the next few weeks to the rest of the officers that were on duty that night.”
