CAPE TOWN - George Mayor Melvin Naik has agreed to respond within a week to grievances raised by Thembalethu residents following violent protests on Wednesday.
Naik met with protesters after the group took to the streets to vent their frustrations about service delivery issues and a lack of housing in the area.
Protesters burnt a municipal building, which was partly damaged, as well as a car and other debris. As a result, the main road leading into the township was blocked. The road remains inaccessible due to the rubble.
The police's Malcolm Poje says they will continue monitoring the situation.
“We will still be monitoring the situation as it’s still volatile. The damage caused by this protest will be determined soon.”
