JOHANNESBURG – African National Congress (ANC) NEC member Joel Netshitenzhe has welcomed an apology by Bell Pottinger but says the UK PR company must explain exactly what it did.

Bell Pottinger has been accused of stirring racial tension in South Africa through work it has done for the Gupta family.

A string of leaked emails have revealed that it also helped the MK Military Veterans Association and the ANC Youth League in their campaigns to discredit critics of President Jacob Zuma and the Guptas.

The company confirmed its lead partner on the Gupta’s Oakbay capital account was sacked and three others were suspended over the matter.

Netshitenzhe says that more details are needed.

“The apology, of course, is welcomed but the issue does arise; what exactly did they do? What kind of messages did they instruct people to communicate? And who were they dealing with?

“These are some of the questions which have not been explained yet.”
