CAPE TOWN - SA Rugby confirmed on Friday that both the Cheetahs and the Kings are out of Super Rugby from next season.

A special general meeting was called for today, at which the fate of the South African franchises in Super Rugby would be decided.

SA Rugby’s special general meeting is a mere formality after two statements released indicated that both the Cheetahs and the Kings have agreed to explore international competitions for 2018.

This morning’s meeting will rubberstamp South Africa's four participants that will compete in the new 15-team Super Rugby Competition, including five teams from New Zealand, four from Australia and one each from Argentina and Japan.

Reports from the UK suggest the South African franchises will join the European Pro 12 this year after Sanzaar took the decision to downsize the bloated Super Rugby competition.
