JOHANNESBURG - The police say there will be no prosecutions or destruction of any firearms until the entire process of changing the Firearms Control Act is completely finalised.

Earlier this week, the High Court in Pretoria declared two sections of the act of 2000 unconstitutional.

Gun owners were required to renew their licences every five years. The failure to do so meant that an owner was in illegal possession of the weapon.

The court has given Parliament 18 months to amend the act.

The police's Vish Naidoo said: “There will be no prosecutions and destructions to firearms until the whole process is finalised.”
