Police search for suspects after Cape Town CBD robbery
A gang of armed robbers hit a Cash Crusaders store, but their getaway was thwarted, leading to a stand-off with police.
CAPE TOWN - Police are hunting two suspects following an armed robbery at Cash Crusaders in Cape Town’s city centre.
The robbery brought the Cape Town CBD to a standstill on Wednesday.
Exact details of what happened remain unclear, with eyewitnesses reporting three armed men entered the shop while police say there were only two.
An eyewitness described what happened: “Suddenly we see smoke coming out of Cash Crusaders and we’re wondering what the hell is going on. Suddenly we just see three guys with their guns kneel down on the floor and the smoke is just roaring out and we’re like what the hell is happening. Suddenly we see all the cops coming, blocking, barricading everything off and we’re like oh my God, this is actually a robbery.”
One eyewitness was walking through town when the robbers struck and she has described how she saw heavily armed unmasked men crawling on the floor of the shop.
The section in front of the Cash Crusaders on Strand Street remained cordoned off to allow police to gather forensic information.
The police's Noloyiso Rwexana says no injuries have been reported.
“According to available info, two suspects entered the premises, threatened employees with a firearm and a knife and ordered them to go to the back of the store. The suspects fled the scene with a cellphone. No injuries were reported, the investigation continues.”
It is not yet known how the robbers managed to escape police and what they stole.
