PRETORIA - Stats SA’s formal sector employment survey shows a decline of 48,000 jobs in the first quarter of the year compared to the last quarter of 2016.

Statistician-General Pali Lehohla released the latest figures at a briefing in Pretoria.

The survey measures the changes in employment across all industries in the formal sector of the economy.

Lehohla says that employment declined by 0.5% from the last quarter of 2016 to the first quarter of this year.

"Quarter-on-quarter, employment dropped by 48,000 and year-on-year it dropped by 58,000. Usually, the last quarter of the year, compared to the first quarter of the next year, always shows a decline because there is Christmas and business is booming, particularly in retail and so on. But year-on-year there has been a decline. This is an important point to make."
