[WATCH LIVE] First sitting of inquest into death of Ahmed Timol
The anti-apartheid activist died in police detention 45 years ago.
JOHANNESBURG - The first sitting of the inquest into the death of anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Timol is set to begin in the High Court in Johannesburg this morning.
Timol died in police detention 45 years ago after falling from the 10th floor of the John Vorster Square police station, now known as the Johannesburg Central Police Station.
The apartheid government said he committed suicide, but a private investigation launched by his family uncovered new evidence.
The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s Neeshan Balton says they welcome the National Prosecuting Authority’s decision to reopen the inquest.
