CAPE TOWN – At least 750 University of the Western Cape (UWC) students will receive financial aid.

Qualifying students in the so-called missing middle category will receive assistance, thanks to R12 million donation from Absa.

The missing middle category refers to students who are deemed too rich to qualify for government support, but too poor to afford tuition fees.

UWC's Manie Regal says the university remains committed to finding ways to assist needy students.

“Bursaries have been distributed to the qualifying students and it is essentially given to cover their debt.”

UWC students had protested and called on management to scrap all historical debt during Fees Must Fall demonstrations.

Several other tertiary institutions, including Cape Peninsula University of Technology, protested over debt and registration fees, among other things.
