CAPE TOWN - The Knysna Fire Department says two flares-ups in the area have been brought under control and fire crews remain on scene.

The devastating blaze caused havoc along the Garden Route last week, claiming seven lives.

Hundreds of properties have also been destroyed.

The Knysna Municipality says a large-scale construction programme is underway to rebuild the town.

The town’s tourism industry has also suffered a hard knock following the devastating fires.

Authorities ensured that tourists who were booked into affected hotels and guest houses were accommodated elsewhere.

Knysna Tourism's Elmay Bouwer says that the town is open for business and all activities, like the Oyster Festival in June, will go ahead as scheduled.

“The festival is a great opportunity for people to help our residents recover from this disaster. We look forward to welcoming a record number of people to this festival.”
