JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng Premier David Makhura is joining South Africans in Youth Day commemorations in Soweto on Friday morning.

The event started with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Hector Peterson Memorial this morning and is being followed by an 11km walk to the Nasrec Expo Centre.

MMC for Community Development Nonhlanhla Sifumba and Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi are among those commemorating the day.

Lesufi says it’s now time for the youth.

“Now it’s their time to take over. We’ve done everything that we’ve done, we’ve laid the foundation for democracy through the Constitution. We’ve fought the battle to eradicate inequality, now we’re handing it over, the question is are they ready?

“Are they ready to run this country? Are they ready to compete with the best in the world? Are they ready to make South Africa proud and that’s what worried us.”
