JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) national executive committee (NEC) member Fikile Mbalula says he supports Gauteng Premier David Makhura to be the next secretary-general, saying Free State Premier Ace Magashule – who is preferred by the youth league – will destroy what’s left of the party

Mbalula tweeted this earlier on Thursday, and his spokesperson has confirmed his account was not hacked.

The ANC will elect new leaders at the party’s conference later this year.

This week, the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) and the party’s uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association announced they will back ANC NEC member Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to be the next president.

In that slate, Magashule, who is also President Jacob Zuma’s loyal supporter, featured as a preferred candidate to take over as secretary general.

Now Mbalula says the Free State premier will destroy the ANC tweeting:

“Ace Magashule is a definite no no no, the man will finish what is remaining of our movement, and he will kill it.”

He tweeted again saying:

“I ran my race and I was defeated in Manguang, I am not party to any faction, David Makhura is a good damn leader, hardworking and honest.”

He has now urged the ANCYL to rally behind Makhura.
