SA's Nkoana-Mashabane warns against coup attempt in Lesotho
International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane says the SADC will not tolerate any attempt to overthrow a democratically elected government.
JOHANNESBURG - International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane has warned against anyone attempting to carry out a coup in Lesotho.
She was speaking at the African National Congress’ headquarters in Johannesburg.
Nkoana-Mashabane says the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will not tolerate any attempt to overthrow a democratically elected government but didn't give further details.
Lesotho held its third election in five years last week, following instability and concerns of military interference in politics.
Nkoana-Mashabane did not specify what was apparently being planned in Lesotho but remained adamant that government will continue monitoring and supporting the country.
“We will not allow for it to happen in our backyard. This is not a threat, it’s the way it is.”
She says snap elections in the country were successful.
SADC facilitator Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit the country after the inauguration of the new leadership to kick start the implementation of the country’s reforms.
