Media Monitoring Africa unsure of digital terrestrial TV implementation
MMA says it’s not certain what kind of digital terrestrial television system will now be implemented after Constitutional Court judgement.
JOHANNESBURG – Media Monitoring Africa says it’s not certain what kind of digital terrestrial television system will now be implemented after Thursday’s Constitutional Court judgment.
Five judges to four ruled that eTV must lose its application to overturn former Communication Minister Faith Muthambi’s decision to implement a policy of unencrypted TV signals.
But they also criticised the way she had done a U-turn on the issue.
The broadcaster says it is studying the judgment.
Media Monitoring Africa’s William Bird says the ruling makes important points.
“The various critics made of the minister and the process that was followed and I think that the impact of whatever that’s going to happen with regard to encryption now is pretty much out of our hands.”
